Travel chaos as storms ravage UK

Motorists are still facing hazardous driving conditions as storms continue to ravage the UK.

Snow, ice and gale-force winds have caused widespread disruption, with a number of road closures in place. Damage to overhead electric wires and fallen trees has also forced a number of road closures.

The BBC reports that 13,000 homes in Essex are without power, while police in Scotland are urging motorists to drive with ‘extreme caution’ and, up until 5am this morning, those in Scotland and northern England were advised not to drive at all.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in place for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

Meanwhile, the QE2 Bridge at the Dartford Crossing was closed overnight but has now reopened, while in Suffolk, the Orwell Bridge on the A14 was shut until 9am due to high winds.

Elsewhere, a number of vehicles, including jacknifed lorries, got stuck on the A75 Euroroute in the Dumfries and Gatehouse of Fleet area on Wednesday night but it was fully reopened by morning.
