Nissan considering switching SUV production to Sunderland

Nissan is understood to be considering moving production of two SUVs from a plant in Barcelona to Sunderland.

Reports suggest that it is in discussions with Alliance partner Renault to switch the production of its Kadjar and Captur models from Spain to Sunderland. Both models share a platform with Nissan’s Qashqai and Juke models.

This move would form part of a major restructure, which will see Nissan cut global production by 20% by 2023.

Switching production of the Kadjar and Captur models to Sunderland would secure thousands of jobs at the plant, which has received significant investment in recent years but has spare capacity after the cancellation of models in 2019.

Nissan has described the reports as “speculative” but is expected to make an announcement on 28 May.
