UK roads not fit for purpose

More than 20,000 miles of UK roads aren’t up to scratch, according to new analysis.

The BBC has found that surveys carried out by the Department for Transport has revealed that about 10% of the roads in England, Scotland and Wales were not top standard – that equates to 22,990 miles.

This comes after the Asphalt Industry Alliance found more than 24,400 miles of road need essential maintenance in the next year.

The government has said it will invest £6bn in improving roads, but the RAC believes the poor state of UK roads follows years of underinvestment.

Simon Williams, a spokesman for the RAC, said, ‘Before the cold snap the condition of many local roads was on a knife edge with many councils struggling to fix our roads properly.

‘But now, as a result of the ‘Beast from the East’ some local roads will have deteriorated even further, possibly to the point that they represent a serious risk to the safety of users.’
