Snow, rain and floods

Travellers returning home from trips over the bank holiday were met with delays on the roads from heavy rain and snow.

Parts of Scotland, north Wales and northern England were covered with up to four inches of snow. In southern England, heavy rain fell.

Flood warnings and alerts were made in England, Scotland and Wales on Sunday and Monday.

On the 2nd of April, the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings while the AA warned motorists that they faced one of the busiest bank holidays seen in recent years.

On Monday evening the Environment Agency had issued 41 flood warnings and 217 flood alerts in England. Natural Resources Wales issued one flood warning and 19 flood alerts in place for Wales.

Some of the roads closed by floods and snow included: A616 in South Yorkshire in both directions between A628 (Hazelhead) and A6102 (Deepcar), A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions, and A14 westbound exit slip at Junction 28 near Cambridge.

The bad weather was also to blame for the postponement of sports events, horse racing and even the decrease of shoppers to High Streets.
