Snow causes weekend chaos

The UK was again struck by arctic conditions over the weekend with vehicles stranded and road closures across the country.

Over 20cm of snow was recorded in central and southern England as temperatures fell below freezing with lows of -5C in Scotland.

The BBC reported dozens of vehicles were stranded overnight on the A30 dual carriageway in Devon amid heavy snow. A 64-mile stretch of the A30 from the M5 at Exeter to near Bodmin in Cornwall was closed by Devon and Cornwall Police to allow its officers and Highways England to clear the route.

Elsewhere, ice resulted in delays and 37 cancellations at Gatwick Airport on Sunday night. Meanwhile in Wales, more than 170 schools will be fully or partially closed on Monday.

Forecasters say more normal, spring-like conditions are likely to return to most areas by Tuesday.
