Pedestrian killed in collision with autonomous car

An autonomous car has killed a pedestrian in what is believed to be the first fatal crash involving a self-driving car and a pedestrian.

The incident happened in Arizona, America, when an Uber car in autonomous mode failed to detect a 49-year-old woman who was walking with her bicycle outside of the crosswalk.

There was a vehicle operator behind the wheel of the car at the time, but the car, which was travelling at about 40mph, did not appear to slow down.

Uber has said in response it will pause self-driving operations in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.
