Fire engulfs 1,400 vehicles
An estimated 1,400 vehicles were destroyed in a ‘ferocious’ blaze which engulfed the multi-storey car park in King’s Dock – next to the Liverpool Echo Arena – on New Year’s Eve.
Firefighters said an accidental fire within a vehicle caused other cars to ignite causing an intense fire which even melted the concrete floor of the structure in part of the seven-floor block.
Dan Stephens of Merseyside Fire and Rescue, said, ‘I believe a sprinkler system would certainly have suppressed the fire.
‘It would definitely have limited the spread and given us a much better opportunity to put the fire out before it spread to the extent it did.’
No one was hurt in the blaze.
