Arizona suspends driverless cars

The governor of Arizona, Doug Ducey, has suspended driverless cars on the state’s roads following the fatal accident of a woman last week.

A few days after the accident, a video was released to the public showing the alarming moments that led up to the incident. It was after watching Uber’s video that Doug decided to write a letter to Uber’s CEO and suspend all driverless cars as a matter of safety.

In the letter to Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, Doug stated, ‘Improving public safety has always been the emphasis of Arizona’s approach to autonomous vehicle testing, and my expectation is that public safety is also the top priority for all who operate this technology in the state of Arizona.’

‘The incident that took place on March 18 is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation.’

After reading the governor’s letter, Uber released a statement claiming they would cooperate fully with Doug and the investigation.

Uber’s statement said, ‘We proactively suspended self-driving operations in all cities immediately following the tragic incident last week. We continue to help investigators in any way we can, and we’ll keep a dialogue open with the Governor’s office to address any concerns they have.’
