Nationwide sets 250 apprenticeship target

Nationwide has announced plans to increase the number of apprentices on its Nationwide Apprentice Programme to 250 this year.

This works out at roughly two per site.

People director Louise Cope said, ‘As the UK’s largest accident repair group, we have a responsibility to the industry to invest in the skills, training and development of people and the young people that will become the future of our industry.

‘We have been supporters on apprentice schemes throughout our history and are all too aware of the skills shortage and aging workforce that not only affects Nationwide but the wider industry. Nationwide succession strategy will lead to opening doors for the talent of the future to start their journey towards a successful career in our industry and with Nationwide.’

Nationwide’s apprenticeship programme has evolved to meet the demands of the industry, with the views of those entering the industry taken into consideration.

Darren Gagan, head of HR operations, said, ‘The programme covers the classic routes of panel and paint, and we have also included multi-skilled within our portfolio, and a commercial apprenticeship. We had to listen to what the young people were telling us about what would engage them and I think we’ve done that with our multi-faceted approach. This includes time spent on classic skills, but also time in front of house, in parts, and with the VDAs.

‘Our apprenticeships are now unique in the motor industry as being the first to be qualified at multi-skilled NVQ level as well as a classic skill like panel or paint. Those young people are history in the making and we’re rightly proud of what they’ve achieved.’

To drive up the number of apprentices, Nationwide will be attending several events throughout the country aimed at attracting future talent. First up, the Nationwide Talent Acquisition Team will next week be at Arena MK at the National Apprenticeship Show 2017 engaging with 100s of potential apprentices, highlighting the opportunities available to them at Nationwide.
