Fleets urged to accelerate updates

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has urged bus and coach operators to accelerate the process of updating their fleets to reduce emissions.

The SMMT held its annual bus and coach briefing this week with a range of senior industry figures.

A key message from the meeting was the need for fleets to update, with SMMT figures showing that replacing London’s buses with Euro VI vehicles could cut the NOx emissions produced by buses in the capital by up to 75%.

The perception remains that coach and fleet emissions remain high, but this isn’t true to newer models. Truck, bus and coach manufacturers have spent billions developing Euro VI technology, a legal requirement for all new heavy duty commercial and passenger vehicles in Europe since 2014. On top of this, the industry continues to invest heavily in new technologies to further improve air quality.
