Bike-share ‘national standard’ welcomed

News that the government is considering a ‘national standard’ for bike-share schemes across England have been welcomed by operator nextbike.

Jesse Norman MP confirmed to parliament last week that discussions were currently taking place with various stakeholders about the need for a consistent national standard for bike-share schemes, to ensure they are appropriately introduced and managed.

nexbike UK is one of a number of operators that have previously called for greater regulation to ensure bike-share schemes are properly managed across the country.

Julian Scriven, nextbike UK managing director, said regulation was important for the successful growth of the industry.

Julian said, ‘The public bike-share world has changed beyond all recognition over the 18 months and looks set to continue to do so. This is fantastic news, but such rapid change brings its own challenges.

‘While the benefits this brings in terms of easing congestion, and improving air quality, public health and accessibility are welcomed in towns and cities with bike-share schemes, as an industry we need to ensure all operators adhere to the same stringent practices to ensure good management.’

First launched in Bath in 2014 and also operating in Milton Keynes, Exeter, Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and the University of Warwick, nextbike has grown to become one of the most integrated modes of transport for users across the country.
