Aston Martin commits to EV

Aston Martin has revealed plans to go electric with 100% of its vehicles hybrid by the middle of 2020s.

Dr Andy Palmer, president and chief executive officer of Aston Martin also stated plans to transform a quarter of its range into full EVs by 2030.

Aston Martin is the latest car manufacturer to pledge a hybrid and all-electric future however, according to the FT, hybrid powertrains will be an option on every model whilst traditional powertrain versions will remain on sale.

Aston Martin’s first EV is currently under development – an all-electric version of the Rapide called the RapidE – which is scheduled for launch in 2019.

Suggestions are that the manufacturer will develop its own electric powertrain inhouse. ‘You need to keep core technology inside the company,’ said Dr Palmer. ‘That’s why we make our own V12 engine. We believe that EVs are a core technology, and therefore we want to do them ourselves.’
