VW offers up new R8 insight

VWG UK is promoting awareness amongst the accident repair community of its new Audi R8 in order to disseminate critical repair protocols for the new model.

bodyshop magazine and Thatcham Research attended an event at the National Learning Centre (NLC), Milton Keynes to learn about the sophisticated new multi-material, ASF (Audi Space Frame) construction of the new Audi R8 which features significant carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the first time.

Audi authorised repairers and independent bodyshops are being asked to follow a new procedure when undertaking work on the most advanced super sports car the Vorsprung durch Technik brand has ever built.

The manufacturer is requesting all repairers notify the Audi Customer Service Centre before any R8 body repairs are undertaken. Swansway Crewe has been appointed by Audi UK as its specialist CFRP repair centre in the UK to co-ordinate repairs using the latest ultrasound scanning technology, cutting edge repair equipment and an Audi AG-approved CFRP technician – Martin Smith – one of only five such technicians globally.

Franco Iannotta, paint and body technical manager (VWG UK) said, ‘Due to the safety critical location of the CFRP content in the all-new Audi R8, body repair work on the car must only be undertaken by an Audi Approved CFRP technician.

‘As a result, Audi UK is asking all repairers to observe a ‘report before repair’ rule before undertaking any structural work. Technicians should notify the Audi Customer Service Centre ([email protected]) of a repair requirement and await further instructions before commencing work, even on occasions where seemingly simple jobs such as bumper repairs are required.’
