Toyota remains top-selling carmaker

Toyota was the world’s highest selling maker of new cars for the fourth consecutive year.

The Japanese company sold 10.15 million vehicles in 2015, which was slightly higher than expectations, although it did see a fall of roughly 0.8% from its 2014 sales. Toyota was also the only carmaker to sell more than ten million new vehicles in 2015.

Volkswagen was second with 9.93 million vehicles sold, while GM took third, with 9.8 million sales.

VW had overtaken Toyota in the first half of 2015, but business slowed down for the German company in the second half of the year in the wake of the high-profile diesel emissions cheating scandal.

Overall, business for car makers in both major and emerging markets was reduced on 2014 in the wake of the global economic slowdown.
