PSA targets 3D development

A Californian start-up has formed a new alliance with PSA Group to develop 3D printing technology.

Backed by a ‘strategic partnership letter of intent’ the aim is to implement Divergent3D’s 3D printing technologies into PSA’s manufacturing process. Both companies have stated they plan to be a ‘global leader in efficient automotive manufacturing.’

In 2015 Divergent3D founder, Kevin Czinger produced a vehicle with a printed 3D chassis which demonstrated its potential. The prototype used laser-based 3D printing with metal powders to produce tubular aluminium junctions, known as nodes. These nodes were connected via carbon-fibre tubes.

Divergent3D and PSA are yet to announce formal production plans but it is believed the technology could be scaled to mass annual production.
