Police track hire car gang

A gang targeting luxury vehicles in a suspected £1m hire car sting are being tracked by police reports The Daily Record.

Detectives believe the gang have set up bogus companies to hire high-end vehicles which are never returned with one business along losing £200,000 worth of vehicles.

The report states the gang pose as corporate clients to agree the hire of single cars and entire fleets, providing registered company details and insurance certificates.

One business in the north of England lost £200,000 worth of vehicles, including BMWs and Range Rovers. Police believe the gang have repeated the fraud with several other firms.

A source close to the investigation revealed two of the vehicles had been traced in central Scotland. One was recovered by investigators from the car park of Monklands hospital in Airdrie. Another was stopped during a routine check in Glasgow.

The investigation into the gang involves Police Scotland, Greater Manchester Police and the National Crime Agency’s economic crime command.
