Opel announces new European launch

Opel has announced it will launch a new electric car in Europe which it hopes will break barriers in both price and range.

The Ampera-e, a five-door, five-seat hatchback, is expected to compete with Volkswagen e-Golf, Ford Focus electric and BMW’s i3 electric variants.

Powered by an electric motor which is capable of delivering 197 horsepower combined with 266lb feet of torque, it’s expected to accelerate from 0-60 mph in about eight seconds. A similar battery is already being used by Chevrolet Bolt, which can charge from zero to full in just nine hours.

Among its exclusive features and add-ons, the Ampera-e includes the OnStar proprietary infotainment system and its capability to work with most smartphone services.

Launched initially in Europe and then UK, the Ampera-e is part of an aggressive launch policy which Opel says will see a further 29 vehicles added to its line-up by 2020.
