London tops UK’s uninsured charts

New research has found that around 216,000 of the 3.9 million cars in London are uninsured.

Research conducted by Churchill Car Insurance based on Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) data revealed that one in eight cars on the road in east London do not have insurance.

There are an estimated one million uninsured drivers in the UK, with east London, north London and south east London topping the list of uninsured hotspots with 13.4%, 9.3% and 9.1% respectively.

North west London and east central London are also in the top 10, along with Liverpool, Bradford, Manchester, Oldham and Ilford.

Mark Chiappino of Churchill told The Guardian, ‘The number of uninsured vehicles on the roads is alarming. Car insurance is a legal requirement but hundreds of thousands of motorists continue to flout the law.

‘Drivers across the UK are paying higher premiums as a result of unscrupulous drivers that fail to insure their vehicles. We are calling for a greater recognition of the risks of uninsured motoring in the UK and far tougher penalties for those convicted of this offence.’
