Life sentences for careless drivers

Drivers involved in fatal accidents while using their mobiles could face life in jail.

The government wants to ramp up the sentence to bring it in line with manslaughter. At the moment motorists who cause death by dangerous or careless driving face a maximum of 14 years behind bars.

However, motorists who were speeding, racing or using their mobile phones at the time of the accident could soon face much longer sentences. The harsher penalties could also apply to those who were found to be under the influence of drugs or drink.

The proposals have been welcomed by road safety charity Brake.
