Inaugural Volvo XC90 day a success

Volvo Cars UK inaugural XC90 body and technology training day took place on Thursday 14 January and proved a major success amongst those in attendance which included bodyshop magazine editor, Mark Hadaway.

The day, which is an addition to the highly popular Volvo Cars UK product/technology update course, explores the latest technology and associated safety devices to feature on the new Volvo XC90 – officially named as Euro NCAP’s 2015 Best in Class for both large off-road and overall performance categories.

The new Volvo XC90 is a completely new vehicle based on Volvo’s future focused scalable product architecture (SPA) platform and features almost 40% more boron steel within its body construction than the previous model. For the first time it also sees Volvo use rivet and bonding in construction.

The vehicle features a host of safety features under the Intellisafe banner including two world firsts: run-off road protection and auto brake at intersections.

Steve Plunkett, Volvo body and paint development manager, said, ‘we believe sharing safety information with the industry is vital and we need to ensure that momentum continues. As a brand we have more models on the horizon and we want to ensure our customers are provided with the best possible service. This we do through raising awareness amongst our partners and helping them truly appreciate our vehicle construction, methodologies, safety features and technologies.’

Course tutor, Gary Tacey, lead technical and product trainer at Volvo Car UK, said, ‘Every time we introduce a product it exceeds the previous in terms of safety – the XC90 is a turn-key vehicle for us moving ahead.

‘We are now in an environment where by components on a vehicles which had little influence on safety previously are now at the heart of it all. Awareness is crucial, correct methodology is vital.’

The second Volvo XC90 body and technology training day is set for 2 September 2016 and is available to all.
