HPT powers into third

The Dutch Human Power Team (HPT) from the Delft University of Technology and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, backed by AkzoNobel’s Vehicle Refinishes business, achieved third place in the World Human Powered Speed Challenge.

Held in the Nevada Desert, the challenge for recumbent bicycles pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the world of engineering, speed and endurance.

This is the sixth year in which HPT Delft and Amsterdam has taken part, and on four occasions it has won in the men’s category. This year the students ranked as the third fastest university team, with Jan Bos, former Olympic skater, recording a top speed of 124.73kmh. First place was awarded to the Canadian team AeroVelo, whose rider Todd Reichert set a new world record of 142.04kmh.

Remco Maassen van den Brink, marketing director for AkzoNobel’s Vehicle Refinishes business, said, ‘Something we have in common with the students is a constant drive to achieve greater efficiency and to challenge what is possible. We also share a passion for sustainability, as embodied in our Planet Possible initiative which encourages industries to do more with less. We congratulate HPT on a fine achievement and we are delighted that together we continue to explore new possibilities.’

AkzoNobel has sponsored the HPT team since 2013, when it helped the VeloX 3 bike to set a new world record. By providing Sikkens performance coating products, along with advice and practical help, AkzoNobel ensures that drag is reduced to a minimum.
