EU sues UK over dieselgate

The UK and six other countries are being sued by the European Union for not taking action against Volkswagen for cheating emissions tests.

The UK, Germany, Spain and Luxembourg are facing legal action for not taking action the car maker, while the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Greece are accused of not even considering fining manufacturers over violations.

Further, the UK and Germany have been asked to explain why they didn’t share details of the breaks of EU emissions laws following national investigations earlier this year.

VW has set aside about $16.5bn to compensate drivers in the US, but has refused similar compensation packages in Europe.

More than one million cars in the UK are involved.

Industry commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said, ‘National authorities across the EU must ensure that car manufacturers actually comply with the law.’
