Branson’s 15-year electric vision

Richard Branson believes that all cars could be electric within just 15 years.

The British entrepreneur said, ‘Fifteen years from now, I suspect every car on the road will be electric. If governments set the ground rules and for instance said, ‘more than 50% of cars must be battery-driven in 10 years and 100% in 15 years,’ we could make that happen.’

Earlier this year Dutch politicians expressed their desire to ban the sale of new petrol and electric cars by 2025.

Richard Branson continued, ‘It will be great fun and really challenging to do. The cars would be much more efficient – they’re not going to keep on breaking down and battery technology will get better and better.’

More than a million electric cars have been sold to date, but that still represents just 0.1% of all cars on our roads. However, the Electric Vehicles Initiative predicts that figure could rise to 20 million by 2020, providing a global market share of 1.7%.
