Bodyshop urges tyre safety checks

Following a campaign by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) in association with SIMI on second-hand tyres, Frank Byrnes Autobody Repairs is hosting a free ‘Tyre Check’ clinic.

Frank Byrnes Autobody Repairs based in Oranmore, Galway has invited vehicle owners and members of the public to have their tyres checked by its technicians.

‘There a many factors which cause motor accidents. Unfortunately its part of my business that we see the results of car collisions on a weekly basis here in the workshop and one of the first things I do is check the tyres. All too often it is evident that the driver could have avoided such an incident had they replaced their tyres with safe quality tyres,’ said Frank Byrnes, owner at Frank Byrnes Autobody Repairs.

‘In advance of the summer holiday season and June bank holiday we urge car owners and drivers to check their tyres so as to keep themselves safe and avoid accidents if at all possible. Not only that, with the new penalty points for defective or worn tyres and a risk of a fine of €80 and four penalty points on conviction, it could be very costly in the long run to overlook your tyres.’

A new report from the RSA launched in April 2016 showed that vehicle factors played a role in one in eight (101) fatal collisions in the period 2008 to 2012. Defective tyres were the most significant factor, representing almost two thirds (64.1% or 66) of all vehicle factors identified.
