One in five likely to drink drive

On average 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in drink drive collisions but a survey has revealed this statistic is not enough to stop all motorists from drink driving.

In the survey by vehicle leasing company OSV Ltd, one in five motorists admitted that they are likely to drink and drive over the Christmas holiday. Twenty two per cent of UK drivers made the admission when asked if they were likely to drink and drive over the Christmas period.

The study, which surveyed over 1,000 drivers, revealed that men were five times more likely than women to drink and drive this holiday and young drivers are set to be the biggest culprits of drink driving this Christmas. With 16% of motorists in this age bracket making the admission. The second biggest age range to make the confession came from motorists between the ages of 55 and 64. Nine per cent of motorists in this bracket divulged that they probably would drink and drive over the upcoming holiday.

The survey also showed that motorists based in Scotland are more likely to drink and drive than motorists based anywhere else in the UK this Christmas. Eight per cent of motorists from Scotland made the admission, closely followed by six per cent of motorists located in England.
