Ex-Aviva employee sentenced

An ex-Aviva employee has been sentenced at Manchester Crown Court for passing customers’ motor insurance claims details on to a claims management company (CMC).

Matthew Cooper, passed thousands of customer details to an associate who then sold them on to a CMC. Matthew was sentenced to 10 months, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to work 180 hours unpaid, having previously pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation.

Cooper’s associate, Oliver Simpson, also pleaded guilty to offences under the Data Protection Act and was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in court costs.

Together they made about £20,000 stealing and selling the Aviva data.

The CMC involved was unaware the data was stolen.

The sentencing follows an investigation by the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED).
